The days are quickly getting colder and all I can think of when deciding what to wear in the morning is ”how can I feel as if I’m still under my down feather duvet?”. Growing up in Durban, I never really needed anything warmer than a denim jacket which, in extreme cold weather (16 degrees Celsius with a bit of wind and some light drizzle), I could layer over a jersey and add a scarf, both of which would probably come off by midday. However, as my second Joburg winter approaches, I am well aware of the need to own something a bit more insulative. Cue Sitting Pretty‘s turtleneck sweater and oversized coat, that are making the approaching winter a tad more bearable (and sartorial) for me.
Founded in 2009, Sitting Pretty is an ethical women’s slow-fashion brand that produces small runs of contemporary and stylish pieces. Simple and relaxed, the brand’s collections are a combination of bohemian chic and urban sophistication, characterized by loose cuts and soft tones. Created by designer Emma Longden, Sitting Pretty stemmed from Emma’s own desire to create stylish garments that are ethically produced and have an environmental awareness. With it’s focus on sustainability, ethical trading, and integrity, all garments are designed at their Cape Town-based studio, employing two female owned home-factories to manufacture their designs.
Both the hands that make the garments, and the environment, are thoughtfully considered during the production process; the garment manufacturers are paid fairly, and treated with respect and care, ”As we grow as a brand we want the people that have worked with us to benefit accordingly.” Sitting Pretty is also particular about sourcing natural and environmentally friendly fibres such as organic cotton and hemps, and try to source locally as much as they can, ”We like to grow organically. We would love to go organic with all our fabrics but are limited to sourcing fibres from local wholesalers as our minimum requirements are not high enough, a problem many smaller brands face. We are committed to finding the best fabrics that we can within these parameters. We are always looking at new eco conscious fibres and hope to implement some exciting changes soon.”
I had the opportunity to view their AW18 range at the recent Kamers Vol Geskenke that took place in Joburg this past April, and was instantly struck by this OTT coat. With it’s oversized fit and exaggerated lapel, this is a statement piece that makes me feel all kinds of sophisticated. But more importantly, you can really feel the superior quality and attention to detail in both the overcoat and sweater. These are garments that transcend trend and will undoubtedly stand the test of time (and numerous wears).
