I was a tad slow on the uptake and only last week bought myself a pair of Vans. I’ve never been a major van, I mean fan, of this skate brand. I’ve never skated, because I just can’t console myself with the fact that I am going to fall and potentially get a narly scar or, even worse, a broken bone. So why would I need a pair of Vans sneakers? I also had this perception of Vans being a fashion staple for pretentious scene kids who had skateboards they never used, but kept for steez points (harsh, huh?). But ever since Vans brought out these Old Skool platforms, I was convinced otherwise.
Vans is more than just a skate brand, and has been a key contributor to the ever-growing street culture and skate/surf subcultures. And it’s a damn good shoe. I’ve had friends who had the same Vans for over 5 years, and treated them like shit I might add. The shoes keep going, and the brand keeps growing.
I’ve always loved platform soles and these shoes have showed me that you don’t have to be Tony Hawk to wear them. They are all the things I look for in a shoe:
- Versatile (I can wear them with any outfit)
I paired these babies with a midi slip dress that I have been wearing almost everyday since I bought it because it is so damn comfortable and easy to wear. I am all for one-piece outfits and have been particularly crushing on slip dresses for a while. This dress can be dressed up or down; pair it with heeled boots for an evening look or sandals for a day look. I’ve worn this dress with my New Balance sneakers and my Dr Martens and I just can’t go wrong.
I didn’t write much about this denim jacket in my last post, but feel it necessary to highlight the importance of having an over-sized denim jacket in your wardrobe. An over-sized denim jacket is superior to a regular-sized denim jacket because you can wear it so many different ways. Give that summer dress some edge, give contrast to your skinny jeans, wear it over an over-sized jersey, the looks are endless. An over-sized jacket will always be in style. I have been on a quest for the perfect denim jacket for forever and a day, and finally scored this jacket from Guard The Vintage. I hardly leave the house without it.
