A little while back I posted an image of this dress to my Instagram stories and received so many DMs from you guys asking about it that I knew I had to do a post on it. No phone-camera selfie will ever show the sheer magnitude of exceptional craftsmanship, quality and design ingenuity that this dress encompasses. Everything from the plunging neckline to the tiered double layered skirt and versatile waist-tie creates the most flattering silhouette and I can’t help but feel like my best self whenever I put it on. But what’s even more noteworthy about this garment is the brand from whence it came: Arkins is a sustainable clothing brand based in Manhattan, New York, that produces small batches of exclusive styles that are both stylish and timeless. Made from deadstock cotton and hemp (deadstock referring to merchandise that was never sold to or used by consumers before being removed from sale), this Grey Tier Mini Dress was assembled on a made-to-order basis in-house in NYC by fairly paid makers.
Working with a local factory in the heart of Manhattan’s Garment District, Arkins was founded on the belief that comfortable, quality clothing should be produced in a socially and environmentally conscious manner. Founder and designer, Germaine DeNigris, believes in excluding the negative impacts of fashion and building sustainable, ethically made products: “Simply put, we believe people and the planet are worth far more than profit. No matter how much money you amass as a company, at the end of the day you’re still just a person and you still only have this earth to live on. It’s shameful the waste and destruction that this industry induces. The more we grow as a company, the more we learn, and the more we learn, the more we feel the need to make it right.”
What Arkins stands for is truly admirable; taking on the challenge of slow, sustainable fashion is no easy feat, which is why the consumer mindset shift from ignorance to consciousness is crucial for the longevity of these pioneering brands. Show them some love by following them on Instagram and checking out their amazing collections online.
